KWAZ also supports national projects like Life Trachemys, “Charcos com Vida” (Ponds with life) and “Espécies Invasoras em Portugal” (Invasive Portuguese Species), cooperating with official entities like ICNF, Porto university (CIBIO), Coimbra university (CEF), the Politechnic Institute of Coimbra (ESAC) and rehabilitation centers like RIAS in Olhão. When biodiversity loss is a growing reality, KWAZ’s work has proved to be an asset in terms of conservation and investigation, safeguarding species like the European pond turtle Emys orbicularis or the Natterjack toad Epidalea calamita.
We will continue our work in this crazy world, making a difference every day in every person who visits us!
KW is a space for research, biodiversity conservation and environmental education. As a recent member of AIZA (Iberian Association of Zoos and Aquariums), KW intends to soon incorporate the EEP (European Endangered Species Program) and the ESB (European StudBook) when applying for an effective member of the EAZA (European Zoos andAquariums).
KW has cooperation protocols with the Institute's ESACPolytechnic of Coimbra and with the University of Algarve. The research projects may include undergraduate internships, master's or doctoral degrees. There are also internships organized by the academic federation of medical FAMVet, giving direct support to animal areas in daily tasks of animal welfare, nutrition, environmental enrichment, habitat maintenance, management and veterinary care.
KW also contributes to the conservation of nature through training in the area of invasive plant species (February 2014 and 2016), in the area of ponds’ recovery (March 2014), in interpreting the natural and cultural heritage (May 2014) and capturing and management of wild/ exotic species (November 2017).
